The preferences are very important to customize the application to fit your needs. There are a lot of options that affect the applications behavior or look.

The different sections and their options:


Undo directory is the directory where a couple of undo files are saved. Please make sure that there is always enough disk space available. Otherwise the undo function does not work properly. Default Palette You may select a different default palette here.


Create centered Circles... creates circles from their center. That means you at first set the center of the circle and by moving the mouse you define the radius.

Activate single Dot Paint Tool... activates the single dot paint tool after creating a custom brush with one of the brush pickers and after loading a brush from the brush container. If this option is not selected the last used paint tool will be switched after creating a brush.

Update Magnify Window when cycling... updates the magnify window too if you use the gradient cycling and you are running your Windows desktop with more than 256 colors. For more information see descriptions for theGradient Editor/Toolbox.

Coordinate display starts with 1... will make the coordinate display of the workspace start with 1 instead of 0.

Show Startup tips... Displays useful tips when the application is started.

Show Splash Screen on Startup... Displays the title screen when starting the application.

Display New Project Dialog on Startup... Shows the dialog box to create a new animation after the application is started.

Check for Updates on Startup... Tries to check for new Versions online and displays a corresponding Information.

Cycle grouped Tools with Main Tool Key Shortcut... Within the tool box there are tool groups behind a single button, e.g. line tools. If this option is enabled then the keyboard shortcut of the first tool within the group is used to cycle through the tools if pressed multiple times.

Default Zoom... defines the zoom value that is used after the program is started.

Brush scale (%)... Defines the percentage for the brush size change (shortcuts: Shift + '+' / '-'.

Transparency Pattern... lets you choose the two colors used for displaying the transparency checker pattern.

Reset entire settings puts all program settings back to default. You should restart the application after using this function.

Reset Hints/Questions... when using certain functions special hints and questions appear then can be set to "don't display again". This setting will reset this flag for alle messages.


Quality (0-100)... selects the compression ratio for JPEG saving. "0" is least compression, but highest image quality.

Progressive Encoding... decides if the JPEG image is to be saved with progressive mode.

Interlaced... defines if PNG images are to be saved using an interlaced mode.


The shortcut preferences allow you to customize the keyboard shortcuts for the most functions.
Shortcuts that don't belong to menu entries can be found under the category "Other Shortcuts" and its sub-categories. With the "Reset to Default" button you can reset all shortcuts to the initial defaults.

Project Defaults

Define several default project settings that are used when creating a new project.

File Types

You can set the application to be automatically open when executing several image or animation file types.
